“Where do we go when hope runs out? When we are empty. When there’s nothing left.”
In the fall of 2009, Nick Vujicic and Tyrone Wells met to discuss the possiblity of working together on a project that would allow Nick to cover Tyrone’s song “More”. Nick particularily connected with the lyrics of this song which in any ways mirrors Nick’s personal testimony. The two began to plan the creation of this new venture.
Over the next year the project would come to be known as “The Something More Project” and would take many shapes, ultimately turning into “The Something More Campaign” promoting hope through the art of music and film. This is a vision Nick has dreampt of for many years following the success of the short film where he played the many character call “The Butterfly Circus”.
“When I was ten years old I tried to commit suicide. I had lost all hope. I tried to drown myself, but I couldn’t do it. God had a plan for my life, to give hope to other people through my story.”

The eldest child of Serbian family, Vujicic was born in Brisbane, Australia. He was limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, as well as legs. Where human legs are located they are toeless except for two toes on one foot. Initially, his parents were devastated, though Vujicic was otherwise healthy. Constantly bullied at school for his limbless disability, Vujicic grew depressed and by the age of eight, began to consider suicide . At age ten he tried to drown himself, but did not go through with it out of love for his parents.After praying to grow arms and legs, Vujicic eventually realised that his accomplishments could inspire others – and became grateful for his life.A key turning point came when his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability. Vujicic realized he wasn’t unique in his struggles and began to embrace his disability. At the age of seventeen, started his own non-profit, Life Without Limbs. Vujicic now presents motivational speeches worldwide, on living life with a disability, hope and finding meaning in life. He also speaks about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do his work and that God is big enough to overcome any and all disabilities. Fast forward through the years and Vujicic’s story is still simply as amazing as his testimony and personality. Charismatic and inspirational are two words that quickly come to mind when describing him. As we continue this Sunday with our lessons on the discouragement in our own lives, keep in mind that everyone (and I mean everyone) has moments, times, and sometimes even seasons of discouragement/pain/hardships that leaves us asking “Why God? Why?”. We have to trust that He is sovereign. He is in control. Even when all we see is a life spinning out of control, He sees the bigger picture. Know that God has a plan for your life.

I’ve said it many times, one of the benefits of age is the gift hindsight…the ability to look back long term and see the storms of life and the subsequent beauty and purpose of our existence that flowed in afterwards, as the unfolding of His plan for our life is laid out like pieces of a puzzle that fit perfectly together. We’ve all had moments where we question God and aren’t able to see the complete picture of our lives, but God does. We come through those times in our lives, look back on them (now knowing what was next), and most likely see the situation in a totally different light. Know that God is good and in control. He sees the magnificent, intricate, fascinating, and awesome way each piece works together in His perfect way. He is our strength and our comforter. Instead of asking God “Why?” you should be asking him “How?” and take the focus off of ourselves and turn it to God and others. How can this discouragement, hardship, storm of my life be used to bring honor, glory, and praise to you Lord? Thank you Nick Vujicic for your testimony.
